Kayaking the Waterways of Coastal North Carolina

Brice Creek in Carolina Colours

Brice Creek meanders through Carolina Colours

When my wife Val and I bought property and moved to Carolina Colours, in New Bern NC a few years ago, we decided to try kayaking.  We discovered the Trent River Paddle Club, a very active group of pre-retiree and retiree kayakers who generally embarq on outings from Creekside Park, only minutes from Carolina Colours.   The Club plans outings nearly every week, year round.   Brice Creek, which meanders through Carolina Colours, is a favorite and beautiful kayaking venue.  If you have an interest in the water, and want to see some of the prettiest parts of Carolina Colours, I urge you to give kayaking a try.

Thoughts on Community and Home Choices during Tough Economic Times

Traditional Carolina Colours Home

Traditional Carolina Colours Home

It is true that real estate prices (in New Bern NC and virtually everywhere else) have dropped during the ongoing economic slump, providing value opportunities unlike any that have been available for many years.  An unfortunate side effect of this trend is that many potential buyers, including retirees, are now looking purely for the property with the most attractive price, rather than the property that will best suit their needs or desires.   A housing decision (both where it is and what it is) should be one that is intended to last at least a decade, and the decision that is made will contribute greatly (positively or negatively) to quality of life over that period of time.  My best advice is to decide on a location and a home or home site that is what is wanted, then go get the best value you can get from among those properties that qualify.  Paying a little more (but still a good value) will often allow purchase of real estate that will bring to the buyer  much greater long term satisfaction, and often will also result in a property with a greater resale value when the years pass, and it is time to resell.  After all, there is a reason the cheapest properties are the cheapest, and that reason frequently is a lack of demand over time.

Towne Lawn: Construction Well Underway

Towne Lawn Construction

Towne Lawn overlooks 25 acre Carolina Lake

Grading of the Towne Lawn (on Carolina Lake at the traffic circle) is now complete.  Next up will be grassing the park and underbrushing its perimeters.   We hope you have noticed the enhanced view of the Lake as you drive around the circle.   Our grading plan included both improved site lines, allowing a natural seating area for future events, as well as a level playing area for those wanting more active recreation.  By summer’s end, the  Towne Lawn should be in use.
