Someone Help This Poor Soul!

Sleigh Bells Ring

Sleigh Bells Ring

Thought you all might enjoy the photo above–hot off the cyber press–of Carolina Colours resident “The Blizzard King,” taking a whack out of Mother Nature in the parking lot of his townhouse complex in suburban Washington, DC earlier this afternoon. The Blizzard King is spending the holidays with his lovely wife, daughters and grandchildren, but judging by the weather forecast, he may be spending the next three weeks digging out his car. Already, close to 18 inches of the “white nuisance” had fallen in DC with two feet a distinct possibility. Aren’t we glad that we live in eastern NC!!!!

The Sack Lunches

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. ‘I’m glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap,’ I thought.

Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation.

‘Where are you headed?’ I asked the soldier seated nearest to me.

Petawawa. We’ll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we’re being deployed to Afghanistan.

After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars. It would be several hours before we reached the east, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time.

As I reached for my wallet, I overheard a soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch.  ‘No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn’t be worth five bucks.  I’ll wait till we get to base.’

His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty dollar bill. ‘Take a lunch to all those soldiers.’ She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. ‘My son was a soldier in Iraq; it’s almost like you are doing it for him.’

Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, ‘Which do you like best – beef or chicken?’ ‘Chicken,’ I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class.

‘This is your thanks.’

After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room. A man stopped me. ‘I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.’ He handed me twenty-five dollars.

Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand and said, ‘I want to shake your hand.’ Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the Captain’s hand. With a booming voice he said, ‘I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.’ I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the passengers.

Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in my palm.

When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to deplane. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked away without saying a word. Another twenty-five dollars!

Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base. I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five dollars. ‘It will take you some time to reach the base. It will be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You.’

Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow travelers.

As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals. It seemed so little.

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to ‘The United States of America’ for an amount of ‘up to and including my life.’

That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.’

May God give you the strength and courage to pass this along to everyone on your email buddy list.

I JUST DID

Let us pray…

‘Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen.’

There is nothing attached. Just send this to people in your address book. Do not let it stop with you. Of all the gifts you could give a Marine, Soldier, Sailor, Airman, & others deployed in harm’s way, prayer is the very best one.

GOD BLESS YOU FOR PASSING IT ON!

WOW! How bout those Carolina Colours residents!

To All Caroline Colours Residents:

Allison & Chris Long and their 2 small children have just arrived at their new rental house on Reunion Pointe Lane, next to the Farkas’. They have a rental truck that needs unloaded today (Sunday) starting at 4:30pm. If any of you are able to please come and help out, we should be able to get the job done shortly. Let’s show our new neighbors how welcome they are by lending them a hand.

Thanks–Gary Simon

John & I were at the movies when this request came out, but we stopped by when we were on our way back about 6:30. Chris and Allison said they were shocked and pleased at how wonderful the neighbors had made them feel. They said they must have had 13 people come by.

Linda Gonzales

Our new Carolina Colours neighbors Allison & Chris Long would like to express their sincere thanks to all of the folks who showed up to help unload the moving van. They were completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of friendship & neighborliness. As they settle into their new home on Reunion Pointe Lane, they hope to meet all of the people who make up this wonderful community.

Gary Simon

What a community we live in!!  It was amazing how many people just kept coming to provide  help for Chris and Allison.  We are just part timers, but we are thrilled with how many friends we have made in such a short time and we have assured our new neighbors that they can expect the same.

Thanks for confirming our opinion of the Carolina Colours family!

Golfing Carolina Colours’ 14th Hole

Golf - 14th Hole - View from Tee

Golf - 14th Hole - View from Tee

Leaving the 13th green, the tee of the 14th hole is visible through a narrow strip of woods, to the player’s right. Only approaching the tee, however, does one see the hole; what one sees is a large pond down the left side of this short par 4, and a green that sits against the bulkhead, a pretty site for the non-golfer, but quite a challenge for the golfer that wants to hit at the green. Don’t even think about it, unless you have tour length.

Instead, hit anything from a long iron to a driver between the pocket bunker on the left, and the larger, narrow, S shaped bunker on the right. The fairway is one of the flattest on the course, so direction is the key, not distance. From a good, straight drive, one is left only with a short iron or wedge to the green, which sits to the left, and is guarded from this direction by a rather steep bunker about 10 yards to the front of the green; this bunker must be carried, and a bunker on the back (from the tee) or the right (from the layup) should be avoided. Of course, anything left is wet.

The green is rather small, slopes back to front, and has a bit of a ridge down the middle (from right to left, approaching from the lay up landing area). Putts are not severe, and two putts should be the norm, with one putt frequency exceeding those rare three putts.

Two good swings, and this becomes a birdie opportunity. If you are young and limber, and think you can hit it a mile, eagle can be had, but most that try it will be contributing to the pond bottom filled with balls. Play conservatively, and this pretty hole can help the player keep a low 18 hole score in range.
