New Year’s Eve Celebration!

Nearly 100 Carolina Colours residents and their guests turned out for the first annual New Year’s Eve party at the Pavilion.  With dancing preceding and following a sumptous multi-course meal prepared by Chef Katherine, many a resident felt sore muscles Sunday morning as a reminder of the good time had the previous evening.

New Custom Home

Congratulations to Louis and Roseanne Humphrey, from Durham, NC.  They are retiring to Carolina Colours, and they are the most recent property owners to have house plans approved for construction.  Mike Maher, their builder, indicates that construction on lot 2, Waterleaf, will begin the first week in January.  This is the second home to go under construction in Waterleaf, the newest neighborhood addition to Carolina Colours.  Occupancy is expected by the end of summer.

Christmas at Carolina Colours

Thanks to the many volunteers who got all our community wreaths and decorations ready for display, and to those hearty souls who climbed the ladders throughout the community to hang and display them.  As has been the case for years, Carolina Colours looks great at Christmas, thanks to a lot of labor and love.

The community Christmas party at our Pavilion had over 100 members in attendance.  Featuring a great meal by Chef Katherine and a coastal Christmas decoration motif, thanks to the social committee, everyone had a great time.  The Christmas gift exchange and “stealing” , as is the case every year, brought a lot of laughs, and gave everyone a chance to savor their wine.

On to our New Year’s party upcoming, as we will end the year in style!

Friday Evening Breakfast

Chef Katherine turned the normal Friday night members meal at the Carolina Colours Pavilion into an elaborate breakfast recently.  The food, including the home made  pastries, drew raves.  And those electing to attend in pajamas were the evenings entertainment!

The event was so popular, we can start looking at some Sunday brunches in 2012.

Hole in One!

John Lucas, a property owner in Carolina Commons at Carolina Colours, and a member of the Carolina Colours Golf Club, made his first ever hole in one today (9/23/11) on hole number 2.  He used a 9 iron on the 133 yard hole.  Congratulations!

What A Group!

Fortunately, Carolina Colours has good elevation and drainage.  Therefore, our recent storm visit resulted in no flooding, no injuries, and minimal home damage.  It did, however, leave a lot of debris from trees over roads, yards and the golf course.   In large part because of unrecruited volunteer efforts by a large number of residents, all roads were made passable by the day following the storm, all driveways were cleared within about another day, and most amazingly, the golf course was open for play in a week.  None of this could have been accomplished without the dozens of volunteers who worked, with a smile, to help their neigbhors.   It was truly amazing to see how quickly Carolina Colours was back to normal.   While none of us ever smile when we pay property taxes, we also saw another benefit to being within the New Bern City limits, and the city staff is already working to haul of debris, big and little, where in may communities the citizens have to pay for such service after a storm.

I cannot thank our residents enough.  Our sense of community, as is does so often, shone through.

Annual Pig-pickin’

The annual Carolina Colours pig-pickin’ on Sunday evening, July 17, was, as usual, well attended.  About 110 residents came to the Pavilion for pig, cooked on site, as well as chicken and all the sides.  Attendees brought appetizers and desserts, more food than one can imagine.  After dinner, many played horsehoes, bocce ball and other games, while spectators cheered them on.  Photos from the event will be in our next community newsletter.

2011 Golf Club Member Member

The first ever member/member Carolina Colours Golf Club tournament concluded successfully Sunday, May 15.  With 4 nine hole formats (super ball, Texas scramble, best ball and modified alternating shots), all participating members had an enjoyable experience.

Our men’s division winning team was Gale Biers and Lou Moran, while the ladies champions were Patti Peebles and Claudia Moran.

In order of finish, other men’s teams in the money were David Barnett/Ken Kirkman; Ed Czernik / David Gaulin; Luigi Montesano/Bill Moloney; Jim Babich/Mike Wilkerson; and Jim Emerson/Tom Trimmer.

As for the women, Denis Plourde/Mary Roberts finished second, followed by Nancy Filipow/Kathy Amato third.

Thanks to Pete Dunham, our head professional, for a well run and fun tournament, and to Ken Gerhardt and Chef Katherine for two excellent luncheons.

Our New Golf Superintendent

Carolina Colours Golf Club is pleased to announce that Jason M. Price has accepted the position of Golf Course Superintendent at our Club, replacing the retiring Brad Brooks.   Jason comes to us from Governors Club, near Chapel Hill, NC, a 27 hole Jack Nicklaus facililty.  Jason’s previous experience includes stints at Metacomet Country Club in Rhode Island and the Legends Golf Club in Orlando, Flordia.  Jason begins work the first week in May.  All of us involved in our Club management are confident Jason will continue the excellent job done by Brad, as our recently opened course begins its maturation process.

Oh, What a Night!!!

February 12th was a fabulous night for young (and older) lovers.  The Carolina Colours Social Committee hosted the 3rd annual Valentine’s Day Dinner and Dance.  More than 50 residents and guests partied late into the night.  The evening started with a “Guess WHo” contest,  Couples were tagged on their backs with names of famous couples.  By asking questions, the couple sought to determine their new identity.   All had a great time.

Chef Katherine prepared a great menu, with hors d’oeuvres passed during the cocktail hour, followed by a 4 course sit down meal.  Salad, caviar parfait, beef tenderloin, roasted asparagus, potatoes and a chocolote mousse dessert, made for great eating.

Chuck Kolb provided 4 hours of non-stop music, with dancing from dinner until midnight.  Who knew that the Carolina Colours contingent had such rhythm and stamina, with a great variety of music played and danced to.  The highllight was a special performance of “YMCA” by our our own Carolina Colours Village People–a show not to be soon forgotten.  With the success of this event, more dinner dances will certainly be in the offing.

Special thanks to all the social committee, Betty Orsega and Kathy Zimmerman for centrpiece decorations, Chef Katherine for a great meal, Ken Gerhardt for coordinating everything, Kitty and Paul for decorating the ballroom, and all our neighbors who attended and made the event a great success.

The Wreaths Come Down…Thanks

Thanks to the coordination of Mike Wilson and the great community response, all 217 wreaths that were hung along the Carolina Colours streets were removed and boxed up in one morning!  Planned as a two morning task, the 33 volunteers, working in teams, removed the wreaths from their Christmas homes and boxed them for storage in record time, letting the many more that had volunteered for Saturday morning off the hook.  Many of these same volunteers both helped purchase the wreaths, and install them, before Christmas.   All of us at Carolina Colours enjoyed their beauty through the  holidays, and we all certainly appreciate the time and effort put in by so many to make our community a great place to live over the holidays (and the rest of the year, for that matter).
