Oh, What a Night!!!

February 12th was a fabulous night for young (and older) lovers.  The Carolina Colours Social Committee hosted the 3rd annual Valentine’s Day Dinner and Dance.  More than 50 residents and guests partied late into the night.  The evening started with a “Guess WHo” contest,  Couples were tagged on their backs with names of famous couples.  By asking questions, the couple sought to determine their new identity.   All had a great time.

Chef Katherine prepared a great menu, with hors d’oeuvres passed during the cocktail hour, followed by a 4 course sit down meal.  Salad, caviar parfait, beef tenderloin, roasted asparagus, potatoes and a chocolote mousse dessert, made for great eating.

Chuck Kolb provided 4 hours of non-stop music, with dancing from dinner until midnight.  Who knew that the Carolina Colours contingent had such rhythm and stamina, with a great variety of music played and danced to.  The highllight was a special performance of “YMCA” by our our own Carolina Colours Village People–a show not to be soon forgotten.  With the success of this event, more dinner dances will certainly be in the offing.

Special thanks to all the social committee, Betty Orsega and Kathy Zimmerman for centrpiece decorations, Chef Katherine for a great meal, Ken Gerhardt for coordinating everything, Kitty and Paul for decorating the ballroom, and all our neighbors who attended and made the event a great success.

The Wreaths Come Down…Thanks

Thanks to the coordination of Mike Wilson and the great community response, all 217 wreaths that were hung along the Carolina Colours streets were removed and boxed up in one morning!  Planned as a two morning task, the 33 volunteers, working in teams, removed the wreaths from their Christmas homes and boxed them for storage in record time, letting the many more that had volunteered for Saturday morning off the hook.  Many of these same volunteers both helped purchase the wreaths, and install them, before Christmas.   All of us at Carolina Colours enjoyed their beauty through the  holidays, and we all certainly appreciate the time and effort put in by so many to make our community a great place to live over the holidays (and the rest of the year, for that matter).

December at Carolina Colours

December has been a very active month at Carolina Colours, in New Bern, NC.   The 6th Annual Property Owners Association meeting was held at the Pavilion (community clubhouse) in early December, ending with a cookie exchange.  Next was the annual Christmas dinner and party, attended by about 100 residents.  Finally, was the Carolina Colours Home Tour, where about 50 residents were kindly invited to tour 6 community homes, to marvel at the Christmas decorations.  This tour was preceded by appetizers at the Pavilion, and ended up with desserts back at the clubhouse.

All of this has been in addition to the numerous New Bern area Christmas events, ranging from historic home tours, dinner theater, antique shows and the always popular Tryon Palace Christmas specials.  One retiree was heard to remark he never was so busy while working!

New Cherry Point Facility Opens

Governor Beverly Perdue, a New Bern NC resident, returned home to participate in the dedication of a new Engineering Product Support Facility at Cherry Point Air Station, in Havelock, NC on December 14..   This $17.5 million project will house about 200 mostly civilian engineers in its over 35,000 square feet.  The engineers working from this state of the art facility service  numerous different aircraft in active use by the military.  This exceptional facility again shows the importance of the military/civilian cooperation that has led to ongoing job creation in the New Bern/Havelock area of North Carolina.

Golf Course Reactions/Records

Now that the full 18 hole Carolina Colours golf course has been open for playfor about 6 weeks, a good number of members and guests have had the chance to play the course.  Groups from New Bern, Havelock/Cherry Point, Morehead City and Greenville have all been tested by the layout.    Reviews have been excellent.  One former LPGA tour player opined that the greens were as good as those she saw on tour.  The favorable comments on the aethestics of the course have been numerous–no course in the central coastal region winds through the woods like the back 9 at Carolina Colours–no road or home n sight from many of the holes.   Several area pros have commented upon the great job Bill Love, the course architect, did in framing every hole with natural terrain, native grasses and perfectly positioned bunkers.

Most importnatly, the course plays to the ability of the player.  Carefully follow the tee guidance posted in the clubhouse, and an enjoyable day is almost certain to follow.   Our resident pro, Pete Dunham, shot 67 from the green tees, while  Skip Zimmerman, a member and resident, shot 71 from the whites.  Jeb Yowell, one of the course’s maintenance crew, has shot 70 and 71 from the black’s, more than 7,000 yards!

Thanks from the course management to all those who have played and commented so favorable on the course and its design.

Golf Course Grand Opening

The Grand Opening of the full 18 hole Carolina Colours Golf Course took place Saturday, October 16, with about 70 members and property owners playing a highly contested scramble.  While the quality of golf ranged from excellent to the other extreme,  there was unanimous praise for the newly opened back 9 of the course.  With terrain changes and winding bridges over Brice Creek, the heavily wooded site is uniqely beautiful for the New Bern and central North Carolina coastal region.  And with limited public play available, all the golfers in our region have an opportunity to experience a memorable playing experience.

Our winners on Saturday were:

1st place:   Gale and Marilyn Biers; Karl and Sandra Berberich

2nd place:  Mike and Mary Ann Downs; John Gonzales; Luigi Montesano

3rd place:   Ray and Kathaleen Smith; John and Nancy Filipow

Closest to pin on par three  nos 2 and 12:   Larry Wolf and Jim McGraw

Drive closest to the line on no 7:   Peter Koines

Congratulations!

Owner Apprecition Weekend

The fourth annual Carolina Colours Property Owner Appreciation Weekend was held October 15 and 16.   Around 150 owners attended our Saturday night Barbeque at the Pavilion, our biggest turnout ever.  Our normal Friday night dinner attracted nearly 100, also a record Friday turnout.

Local merchants contributed about 50 exceptionally nice door prizes, so a large number of our owners headed home with their hands full.  The highlight of the weekend was the grand opening of the back 9 of our championship golf course, but our social committee had also put togeher a number of New Bern activities for the non-golfers in the crowd.

It is always a lot of fun to have owners planning to build in the future mingle with those already living in Carolina Colours, as friendships are made even before a home is constructed.  With a number of our home site owners using the weekend to meet with builders, the number of constructed homes will continue to increase.

Thanks to all those property owners who attended and participated!

First Hole In One!

Member Chris Babich recorded the first hole in one on the newly opened Carolina Colours Golf Course on Sunday, August 29.  Using her Ping Rhapsody eight iron on the 112 yard 6th hole, a a well struck shot resulted in her Nike ball finding the bottom of the cup.   All of your members offer congratulations to Chris, one of our members enjoying play at Carolina Colours several days each week.

Golf Course Grand Opening!

On Friday afternoon, July 30, a capacity group of 60 Carolina Colours Golf Club members and special guests participated in a shot gun afternoon blitz to open the front 9 of the course.    After watching the course construction for the past 18 months, anticipation was high, and with good reason.  The tee complexes were universally found to be exceptional, while the greens rolled true.  With six teeing grounds, players could chose their ideal length, hoping to avoid the bermuda rough, which was gnarly.  Scores were all over the board, but appreciation of the layout was widespread.  Most of the players teed it up again Saturday and or Sunday.  Many of the players toured the back 9, which is a truly beautiful site in the midst of the woods and wetlands, and now eagerly await its opening this fall.

Many players remarked on the balance of the holes on the front.  With two 3′s, one short and one long; two 5′s, with very different challenges and opportunities; and five 4′s, long, medium and short, no two holes play alike, but all feel a part of a well designed whole.

With cocktails and diner at the clubhouse following golf,  the good times continued into the evening.  Truly a remarkable and memorable day in the on going history of Carolina Colours.
