For those of you who are not from North Carolina, a pig pickin’ is a type of party or gathering held primarily in the Carolinas which involves the barbecuing of a whole hog (source:Wikipedia). Up North, we called them “pig roasts” where they generally consist of digging a big hole, lots of firewood, and lots of guys who stayed up all night drinking and tending to the pig. Depending on the size of the pig, this method took a good 18 hours or so before you could enjoy the meal. Thankfully, the good folks of North Carolina know how to do a pig pickin’ the right way–that means, you contact a local butcher who cooks the pig at his place and delivers it on a trailer, complete with all the “fixins” (bakd beans, cole slaw, potato salad and rolls).

On Saturday, July 10th, Carolina Colours residents hosted our 2nd annual Pig Pickin’ at our Social Pavilion. Special thanks to Mary Ann Ohsol and Diane Barnett for leading the charge, and the rest of the Social Committee for assisting.

It’s a good thing we held it indoors this year since Mother Nature decided to “crash” the party with thunder and lots of rain. More than 120 Carolina Colours residents, property owners, friends and family members joined us for a fabulous party. Attendees brought a variety of delicious appetizers and desserts to complement the pig. The Southern hospitality has definitely spread throughout our community.

Although the games were essentially rained out, we did manage to hold a “putting contest” on our practice putting green. We also held an impromptu game of Bocce Ball in the ballroom.

Great fun was had by all! We are looking forward to more events planned for the the remainder of 2010, Check the website peridically for a listing of upcoming events.

Mary Ellen Dorsey, Co-Chair of the Social Committee

On April 23rd, eighteen Carolina Colours Golf Club members in New Bern, NC, competed in a chipping contest on the Carolina Colours golf course. Confronted with a tricky, breaking 29 yard shot, Dave Stoll won the men’s division, chipping to within 6’4″ of the hole. The overall winner, however, was the women’s division winner, Glenda Trenholm, a relative novice, with an excellent chip ending only 5’5″ from the target hole.

April 30th was a special event. For the first time (except under cover of night) members were allowed to play the 9th hole, a par 5 that was set up a relatively short 485 yards for men golfers, and 390 yards for the women golfers. The golfers were only allowed to walk with their putter and 4 other clubs, so strategy was important. Eighteen club members gave it a try, and amazingly, only Bill Moloney achieved par (and no, the rest were not birdies and eagles). Despite a number of good drives, the left side pond seemed to get into the heads of a many members, several of whom pushed their second ball well right, leaving a tough third shot over bunkers, and with water just over the green. Bogey turned out to be a common number on the score card. And yes, the pond captured a few errant shots.

Non golfers also enjoyed the evening as spectators, or playing sports with larger balls, such as bocce and croquet. Friday nights have seen very cooperative weather in New Bern, NC, allowing a great deal of outdoor fun before settling in with a beverage and dinner in the Carolina Colours Social Pavilion.

Please stay tuned to the Carolina Colours blog for updates of Friday night golf challenges and social events and other social events in the community as well in is New Bern, NC and the surrounding coastal region.

The April 16th Carolina Colours golf skills contest was a very long closest to the pin contest, from the front to the rear of the 18th green. 28 members attempted this uphill, left to right breaking monster, with results ranging from 45 feet short, to off the back of the green. Amazingly a golfing newcomer, Suzanne Gifford, won the Women’s Division with a putt stopping only 3’11″ from the cup (besting her experienced husband by some 22′). Jim Orso prevailed in the Men’s Division, with a superb putt that left only a 1’3″ tap in. All participants enjoyed a preview of what a challenge the finishing green at Carolina Colours Golf Club will present later this summer, when the course opens for play.

With the advent of good weather, we have begun holding a golf skills contest during Pavilion cocktail hour each Friday. Our first event of the year was held April 2, with more than 25 property owners putting it out on a 10 hole golf course on our primary practice green. Kathy Amato and Chris Babich ended regulation putting in a dead heat in the ladies division, with Chris winning on the second playoff hole. Ken Kirkman won the men’s division by one golf shot, shooting a 21.

On April 9th a difficult closest to the pin contest was held from the right green-side bunker complex of the 9th green. Men and women competed together, with the men having a long bunker shot, and the women a shorter one. With the pin set across the green and near the fall-off into the pond, the shot was challenging. Each player got one practice shot, and then two that counted. Balls went everywhere (into the pond) and nowhere (still in the bunker) and in between. Roland Gifford prevailed, with a ball ending 10 feet 3 inches from the cup.

Grab your golf clubs and join your fellow property owners as we all enjoy the Carolina Colours practice green, golf course fairways and golf greens. We look forward to sharing the sport of golfing with you in the near future!

We’ve all heard the saying “Better Late Than Never.” Well, I belatedly extend my thanks to all who helped to make this year’s Mardi Gras Soup, Stew, & Chili Potluck Dinner a resounding success. Over 70 Carolina Colours residents and friends attended this year’s event, almost twice as many as last year. Along with this wonderful turnout came many more culinary delights from which we could choose. My Thanks—Finally! BY GARY SIMON

Certainly, no one should have gone home hungry. I would also like to extend my thanks to all of those in attendance who participated in our food drive. Patti Peebles made sure that our contributions made it to a food pantry that serves all of those in need in our community. Shirley Philips, Tess Nosal, and Sandra Cleaves as well as Paul and Kitty from the Pavilion are deserving of thanks fotaking care of the set-up and decorating of the banquet room for our festive event. Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank Fr. Bill for starting off our meal by leading the blessing. Once again, my thanks to all! Can’t wait to see what wonderful recipes next year’s Mardi Gras Potluck will bring.

Hi all,

Just wanted to pass along a great opportunity to “take a seat” with a great organization and help eliminate poverty housing in Craven County.

On April 10, Habitat for Humanity will host “Chair Fair” at their ReStore at 930 Pollock Street in New Bern. The day will be full of fun filled events, centered around a live and silent auction for chairs. Donated by a local New Bern couple, the unfinished chairs have been designed and painted by local artists. Here is a link to a news article about a local High School Art Class, that took many chairs as a class project.

http://www.newbernsj.com/news/bodycopyrag-68917-class-perfection.html

Check out variety of chairs that will be up for auction on Habitat’s website www.newbernhabitat.org. Starting on March 8, many of the chairs will be on display at local merchants. While on display, you many make a sealed bid for that chair. Then, on April 10, at 1:00, a live auction will take place. As well, local churches have donated “pigs for pullin’” so buy or take out your lunch for $6.

The day will be fun filled and more details will be forthcoming.

Patti Peebles

Carolina Cares is a Carolina Colours support group to help our fellow neighbors during times of need. This could include but is not limited to the following:

• Delivering meals to home following hospital stay or during times of illness.

• Providing rides to hospital/doctor appointments and for everyday errands.

• Giving ride and companionship to chemo and other therapy appointments.

• Performing errands such as grocery shopping.

• Providing a needed break for the care-giving spouse by taking them out for coffee or lunch.

• Sending “Get Well” and other appropriate cards.

• Assisting our military families when spouse is deployed overseas.

Carolina Colours is such a wonderful community and we are all blessed to be here. Let’s continue our hospitality and caring to all our residents during times of need.

We want to develop a list of those who would like to join the support group. In this way, we can be prepared to react more quickly and efficiently when the need arises. If you are willing to help, please send us your name and area of interest. In addition you may help us by informing us of neighbors who might need some help.

We look forward to hearing from you and want to thank you in advance for your generous support.
