Congratulations to Dave and Patty Gaulin, the winners of the Nine and Dine golf competition on May 10 (despite one of the most errant shots in the history of the Carolina Colours course by Dave). And special thanks to Jerry Trenholm and his helpers, including but not limited to Gale Biers and Sonny Aluzzo, for the delicious dinner that followed the play. We survived a week with Chef Katherine on vacation in fine fashion (and with the cooks gaining a great deal of respect for what it takes to whip up a three course dinner for 50+ people).

New Bern Art

New Bern’s annual Art Walk is for the 11th straight year to be preceded by the Bank of the Arts Juried Show, on May 11. 120 artists are expected to participate, with judging by Lia Newman, director of programs for Artspace in Raleigh, and a well known artist in her own right.

The show is sponsored by the Craven Arts Council & Gallery and the Twin Rivers Artists’Association, with some funding provided by the North Carolina Arts Council. Call 252.638.2577 for more information. The submitted art will be on display through June 28.

The amazing group of residents at Carolina Colours topped Relay fundraising out at $12,000, a second place finish for all the teams in the New Bern area! Amazing response.

Relay for Life, one of the most successful cancer fighting fund raisers in America, is featuring a 20 person Carolina Colours relay team this year. As part of our community fund raising, the normal Friday night social and dinner featured a number of fund raising endeavors. Each diner contributed $5, a raffle with great prizes was held, a silent auction with donated items was included, and desserts were sold by the slice. Relay luminaries were also sold and contributed.

Nearly 100 residents attended and made the evening a rousing success. Combined with community donations already pledged, the total contributed to Relay for Life this year from Carolina Colours alone will likely exceed $10,000, an amzing per capita feat of generosity.

Many thanks to all who attended and participated. Special thanks go to the Robinson’s, the Purcell’s and the Dorsey’s, all of whom spearheaded the volunteer efforts.

Nicholas Sparks Film Festival

The Nicholas Sparks Film Festival in April has three days of showings for a half dozen popular books by the New Bern author that have been made into Hollywood films.

The film festival is part of the Nicholas Sparks Celebrity Family Weekend, which features a variety of activities including road races and a golf tournament. The proceeds benefit charities in the Sparks Foundation.

The public film festival opens April 20-22.

Grounds Committee 2012

Thanks to the Carolina Colours Building and Grounds Committee for their recent projects, including the clean-up of Landscape Drive right of way and the restriping of the Pavilion parking lot. This committee gets a great deal done every year, helping to keep our Association dues low.

The members of the committee for 2012 are John Filipow, Chair; with Goerge Orsega, John Gonzales, Rob Timmel and Mike Wilson.

NEW BERN – APRIL EVENTS 2012

April 4, 18, 25: Behind The Scenes Of Tryon Palace Gardens – Join the Palace Garden Staff for a behind-the-scenes look at the Palace Gardens. Tour the greenhouse which produces the flowers, vegetables and perennials for the famous Tryon Palace Gardens.

April 13, 14: Spring Historic Homes & Garden Tour – 10 am-4 pm. Homeowners will open their doors so that the public may visit some of the most beautiful and interesting homes and gardens in New Bern’s Historic District. Palace Gardens will also be open during the tour.

April 22: Nicholas Sparks Celebrity 5k and Fun Run – The 5k route takes runners throughout the campus of New Bern High School and finishes on the Nicholas Sparks Track. All proceeds benefit the Nicholas Sparks Foundation and the many worthy charities it supports.

April 28: The Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival at Tryon Palace – String Sextet from the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival at the North Carolina History Center at Tryon Palace Cullman Performance Hall. Doors open at 7 pm.

Host Committee, 2012

The Host Committee of the Carolina Colours Association will again be chaired by Patty Gaulin. Joining her on the committee are Gale Biers, Jerry Tenholm, Rick Cornell, Mary Anne Ohsol and Suzanne Gifford.

This committee both greets new residents, and helps coordinate activities with prospects. In doing so they provide a great service to all Carolina Colours residents, and have proven extremely helpful with those visiting our community.

Social Committee for 2012

Coordinating the very active social events for Carolina Colours in 2012 will be the Social Committee of the Carolina Colours Association. Co-chaired by Mary Ellen Dorsey and Sharon Nelson, its membership also includes Joan Shaffer, Diane Barnett, Amber McCracken, Kathy Zimmerman and Gary Simon. It is hard to imagine better social events than were arranged in 2011, but I suspect such will actually happen, as attendance continues to grow!
