Thanks to the many volunteers who got all our community wreaths and decorations ready for display, and to those hearty souls who climbed the ladders throughout the community to hang and display them. As has been the case for years, Carolina Colours looks great at Christmas, thanks to a lot of labor and love.

The community Christmas party at our Pavilion had over 100 members in attendance. Featuring a great meal by Chef Katherine and a coastal Christmas decoration motif, thanks to the social committee, everyone had a great time. The Christmas gift exchange and “stealing” , as is the case every year, brought a lot of laughs, and gave everyone a chance to savor their wine.

On to our New Year’s party upcoming, as we will end the year in style!

Fortunately, Carolina Colours has good elevation and drainage. Therefore, our recent storm visit resulted in no flooding, no injuries, and minimal home damage. It did, however, leave a lot of debris from trees over roads, yards and the golf course. In large part because of unrecruited volunteer efforts by a large number of residents, all roads were made passable by the day following the storm, all driveways were cleared within about another day, and most amazingly, the golf course was open for play in a week. None of this could have been accomplished without the dozens of volunteers who worked, with a smile, to help their neigbhors. It was truly amazing to see how quickly Carolina Colours was back to normal. While none of us ever smile when we pay property taxes, we also saw another benefit to being within the New Bern City limits, and the city staff is already working to haul of debris, big and little, where in may communities the citizens have to pay for such service after a storm.

I cannot thank our residents enough. Our sense of community, as is does so often, shone through.

Thanks to the coordination of Mike Wilson and the great community response, all 217 wreaths that were hung along the Carolina Colours streets were removed and boxed up in one morning! Planned as a two morning task, the 33 volunteers, working in teams, removed the wreaths from their Christmas homes and boxed them for storage in record time, letting the many more that had volunteered for Saturday morning off the hook. Many of these same volunteers both helped purchase the wreaths, and install them, before Christmas. All of us at Carolina Colours enjoyed their beauty through the holidays, and we all certainly appreciate the time and effort put in by so many to make our community a great place to live over the holidays (and the rest of the year, for that matter).

The developer of Carolina Colours is honored to be a sponsor of the North Carolina Land Trust. For those not familar with the organization, it is a non-profit that, working coorperatively with land owners, purchases lands or easements in eastern North Carolina that are important for habitat, recreation or environmental purposes, or even small farming operations, using money provided by donors, governmental agencies and private grants.

Those of us in Carolina Colours should be pleased that the Land Trust recently proteced 135 acres in our county of Craven, which is adjacent to 163 acres previously protected. These acquistions help to protect the headwaters of Anderson Creek, and to provide a buffer around the Cherry Point military base. This tract is also near th Land Trust’s Magnolia Farm Preserve, and the Croatan National Forest.

The Land Trust has now protected 45,388 acres in North Carolina! Carolina Colours is pleased to donate a membership in the Land Trust to each purchaser of developer owned property in Carolina Colours, adding to the 2110 household members of the organization. We hope that our owners elect to continue their membership long into the future, as the special nature of eastern North Carolina is enhanced with each new acre protected. For more information, visit www.coastallandtrust.org.

Getting a work out … In preparation for the opening of the pro shop, we had to relocate all of the fitness equipment to the Trent room in the Pavilion. Luckily we happen to have a number of members that appear to have used the fitness center in the past, as they were able to lift and move this equipment with ease.

The “moving crew”: Gale Biers, Mike Wilson, Tom Trimmer, John Filipow and George Orsega. Not pictured Jerry Trenholm. Many thanks to the crew.

- Ken Gerhardt

First of all, I would like to give a special thanks to the 25 very dedicated Carolina Colours residents that came out on Saturday April 24 to help spruce up areas of Carolina Colours that are not normally visited. I know that some people had other commitments and that is certainly understandable. Some folks were under the impression that because we pay dues for cleanup, there is no need to do anything further. However, Earth day is one day of the year when everyone pitches in to do just a little extra. Again my hearty thanks to all that helped out.

Hi all,

Just wanted to pass along a great opportunity to “take a seat” with a great organization and help eliminate poverty housing in Craven County.

On April 10, Habitat for Humanity will host “Chair Fair” at their ReStore at 930 Pollock Street in New Bern. The day will be full of fun filled events, centered around a live and silent auction for chairs. Donated by a local New Bern couple, the unfinished chairs have been designed and painted by local artists. Here is a link to a news article about a local High School Art Class, that took many chairs as a class project.

http://www.newbernsj.com/news/bodycopyrag-68917-class-perfection.html

Check out variety of chairs that will be up for auction on Habitat’s website www.newbernhabitat.org. Starting on March 8, many of the chairs will be on display at local merchants. While on display, you many make a sealed bid for that chair. Then, on April 10, at 1:00, a live auction will take place. As well, local churches have donated “pigs for pullin’” so buy or take out your lunch for $6.

The day will be fun filled and more details will be forthcoming.

Patti Peebles

On Wednesday, December 9th, Bearon de Colours, officially joined his new family in Carolina Colours. Bearon de Colours will welcome visitors to the Carolina Colours Social Pavilion daily. Bearon de Colours was birthed through the Bear Town Bears project which brings together local artists and corporate/civic sponsors to place life-size, hand-painted, fiberglass Bears throughout New Bern. The Bear, being the symbol of the historic town of New Bern, was selected for this public-art project.

Many thanks go out to the Carolina Colours Bearon De Colours committee for their many hours of service resulting in this special gift to the Carolina Colours community.
