Mary Ellen Dorsey and Artist Molly Knazek Welcome the Carolina Colours Bear to New Bern

The Carolina Colours Bear has arrived and the artist, Molly Knazek, is painting in the 223 Middle Street Bear Town Bears Studio.  In preparation for New Bern’s 300th Anniversary in 2010, whimsical bears will be displayed throughout the New Bern community.  Bear Tracks will guide visitors through an art experience of these publicly displayed sculptures.  The Carolina Colours Bear will find its new home in front of the Carolina Colours Social Pavilion.

The Bear’s Artist plans to attend the Third Annual Carolina Colours Property Owner Appreciation Day on Saturday, November 14th.  Please plan to join the Bear’s artist and many Carolina Colours property owners for this very special event.

Bear Town Bears is a volunteer, non-profit organization placing fiberglass bears painted by local artists in public and business locations in New Bern and the surrounding area for the enjoyment of the public.

Habitat For Humanity’s Two Houses in Two Days Blitz Build

Habitat Builds New Home for the Ay Family

Ay Family Watches Habitat Blitz Build Their New Home

Hundreds of volunteers blitzed two homes from foundation to roof in two days in New Bern’s Riverstation neighborhood on Saturday and Sunday, October 17th-18th.  Over 400 ready, able and willing construction artists arrived on Saturday while Sunday brought in over 300 craftsmen in spite of extra cool temperatures and high winds.  Crews were led by Habitat Road Trip Crazies traveling to New Bern from many locations along the east coast.  Tom Gerdy, a building contractor from Lynchburg, VA has been involved with Blitz Builds since their inception ten years ago, “A few of us decided we needed to go out and help other communities because so many people had come through Lynchburg and helped us.  About twenty of us went out the first year and after we did it we realized this is a heck of a lot of fun.”  No tools or skills are necessary for this construction work.  Just a big heart with an able and willing body will more than get the many jobs done on this construction site including transporting materials, sawing, hammering, drilling, plumbing, wiring, sheathing, siding and roofing.

A two bedroom home was constructed for Samantha and Marshall Belcher.  A larger home was built for Abu and Alay, originally from Burma and parents of six children with ages ranging from six months to sixteen years.  A Habitat Homes comes with a 25-year, interest free mortgage.  Habitat’s local mission is to eliminate poverty housing in Craven County, one house at a time.  Two Habitat families will be moving into their new homes in New Bern in the near future, thanks to the kindness and generosity of hundreds of volunteers, both working on the job site and quietly in the background.

The next time you run into Patti and Dick Peebles in Carolina Colours, please give them a big Habitat hug and thank them for their many leadership efforts helping to make the New Bern Habitat Blitz Build not only possible, but also extremely successful.  Thanks to the many other Carolina Colours families who also pitched in to help two very special families  have their own very special place to call “HOME”.

Thank you to all who contributed financially to the Build-A-Bear campaign and a very special THANK YOU to the Build-A-Bear Committee.  The committee has secured the funding, the artist, the design and the permanent home for the Bear greeting all who enter the Carolina Colours Pavilion.  The standing Bear is scheduled for delivery in mid-October.

Only one significant decision remains:  What will we name the Bear?  Please email suggestions to Marilyn Biers at mbiers@live.com.  Naming suggestions will be gathered, the top three options identified and offered to the community for voting.

The committee hopes to have the Bear Artist, Molly Knazek, attend the Carolina Colours Annual Property Owner Dinner on November 14th at the Social Pavilion.

Stay tuned to the blog for photographic updates of the Bear’s arrival in New Bern, artistic progress and migration to the Carolina Colours Social Pavilion’s front lawn.

And, it’s never too late to contribute to the Bear’s future.  Contributions will always be welcomed to assure the Bear is well maintained in its well-deserved manner the future.

NC Governor Beverly Perdue and Flag Bearer

NC Gov Beverly Perdue and Flag Bearer

As New Bern prepares for its 300th anniversary in 2010, New Bern artists are busy hand-painting life-size fiberglass bears for public display during the year-long celebration.  Founded by the Swiss in 1710, the bear has become a historic symbol for the town of New Bern.  This public art project was organized and is managed by Bear Town Bears, a local volunteer non-profit organization.

Upon birth in the 223 Middle Street artist studio, the bears will find new homes throughout New Bern and the surrounding areas.  Carolina Colours hopes to become “home” to a new bear in the near future.  Many generous Carolina Colours residents have almost raised the $2800 necessary to adopt a bear.  The bear will find its new home at the Carolina Colours Social Pavilion.  The bear, currently in its design phase, will be painted by local artists, covered with a protective coat to withstand inclement weather, and bolted to a special pedestal making it as tamper resistant as possible.  The community is anxiously anticipating its arrival in November.

If you have not already done so, there is still time to donate to this New Bern and Carolina Colours community-wide effort.  Marilyn Biers stepped up to the bear plate, initiated this effort and continues to collect funding from Carolina Colours residents.  Please consider mailing Marilyn your contribution to the following address

Team Carolina Colours Cycles for Multiple Sclerosis

Carolina Colours Cyclists Bike for MS Charity

Chuck Chilton,Vin Paolino & Eric Brown

“More than 2,400 cyclists loaded up their bicycles and wheeled home late Sunday afternoon after a record three-day fund-raising event to fight multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis affects the the central nervous system, causing reactions that vary in how they manifest themselves and in their severity.  Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and often stops people from moving.  People are generally diagnosed with the unpredictable and often disabling disease between ages 20 and 50 and more than 400,000 people in the US and 2.5 million worldwide are affected.  There have been dramatic research breakthroughs for treatment in recent years, including some at North Carolina Universities.

“Bike MS 2009 was a great success,” said MS Society spokesman Christy Knutson.  The group expects to reach their $1.7 million goal.”

- Reprinted from the Sun Journal, Sue Book, Staff Writer

Vin Paolino and friend Eric Brown travelled from their current home in Andover, MA  to participate in Bike MS.  Alongside Chuck Chilton, of New Bern, 75 miles were biked by the trio.  The Paolinos are building a new home in the Carolina Commons neighborhood in Carolina Colours.  We look forward to welcoming the Paolinos as full time residents next spring.  Their passionate commitment to charitable organizations and Carolina Colours is very much appreciated by all who have come to know and respect them.

Get Hammered by Habitat for Humanity, October 17th – 18th

Hi to All Carolina Colours Residents!

On October 17th and 18th, Habitat for Humanity of Craven County is hosting the Habitat Crazies.  In those two days, two homes will be raised and siding, roofing and dry wall installed!  It will be an awesome event!  Habitat expects upwards of 150 to 200 volunteers for each of those days.  Hopefully, you will choose to be one of those volunteers.

We are in need of hammers.  Do you have an extra hammer you can spare?  The Carolina Colours Welcome Centre (Sales Office) is a drop off point for hammer collections.  The hammer drop off deadline is Thursday, October 15th.

Stay tuned for more information and other opportunities to help with this community effort.  Accept the challenge to “get involved” and help build us build homes for two deserving Craven County families.  One house will become “home” to an young New Bern couple while the other house will become “home” to a refugee family with six children.  You can make a difference in the lives of these families on Saturday and Sunday, October 17th – 18th.

Several of you have suggested a “building shower” where you can help by purchasing needed items for these new homes.  We’ll keep you posted on this effort as our plans progress.

In the meantime, commit to “Get Hammered” with Craven County’s Habitat community service organization!

Please feel free to contact me at 252-571-2421 to share your thoughts or ask questions.

Thanks so very much for your time and consideration of this very special Habitat for Humanity project.

Pat Peebles, Carolina Colours Resident

Habitat for Humanity Crazies: “Just Bring Yourself and a Hammer!” Oct 17th-18th

Support Habitat for Humanity's Many Efforts

Support Habitat for Humanity's Many Efforts

The local chapter of Habitat for Humanity met in the Carolina Colours Pavilion on Wednesday, July 22nd.  Over 60 New Bern residents attended in preperation for the “Two Houses in Two Days” project scheduled in New Bern NC on October 17th-18th.  Fifty experienced “Habitat Crazies,” who travel the country helping local Habitat chapters build homes in their communities, will travel to New Bern to lead this local effort.  One two bedroom home will be built for purchase by a local couple and one four bedroom home will be built for purchase by a local family with six children.  Both homes will be built near the New Bern historic district in the Riverstation neighborhood.  The homes will be built simultaneously.

Habitat Crazie Tom Gerdy  encouraged those in attendance to contribute to this effort in any way possible:  It’s “managed chaos.”  People just jump in and help where they have interests.  Don’t worry, you can join in quickly.  And, you do not have to be physically fit.  You can simply deliver water bottles or fill nail aprons and participate in “Making a Difference. ”  We don’t assign tasks.  We want you to contribute wherever you feel comfortable.  It’s not just about building.  It’s about relationships.  It’s about faith in the world.  It’s about building affordable homes that change lives, not only those who purchase the homes, but also those who selflessly give themselves to the Habitat for Humanity efforts.

Tom closed the gathering with “Affluence is not what we gather.  Affluence is what we give.”

Personally, my whole family plans to participate in this effort.  We will also be working with high school students in Arendell Parrott Academy’s SERV organization.  Annually at APA, approximately 100 students clock in 15,000+ community service hours.  If high school students can find the time to contribute to their communities, surely those of us associated with Carolina Colours can also find the time to help those in need of adequate housing in New Bern.

I urge you to contact the Habitat for Humanity Event Coordinator, Donna Patterson, at 252-633-9599, ext 107 or email habitatdonna@gmail.com to volunteer your time to this significant event.  Carolina Colours’ Patti Peebles has already stepped up to the plate to lead this parade in a big way.  Please consider supporting Patti by joining the team.

Carolina Colours Social Pavilion Hosts Habitat for Humanity Meeting

Volunteers Construct Home for Habitat for Humanity

Volunteers Construct Home for Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is widely recognized as one of the most exemplary non-profit service organizations in the world.  The Carolina Colours Social Pavilion is pleased to host the planning/information session for the two Habitat Homes planned for construction in New Bern, NC.

With the help of “The Habitat Road Trip Crazies,” Habitat will construct two houses in two days in the New Bern area.  The Crazies are lead by Tom Gerdy, a building contractor from Virginia, who has been leading these Blitz Builds for the past seven years.  According to Gerdy, “They didn’t nickname us the Crazies without reason.  This is a group of very unusual people with hugh hearts and their priorites in order.  We usually have between 50 and 70 travelers for each build.  We hope to inspire at least 150 local people each day to come out and play with us.  There is big time excitement surrounding a Habitat Blitz that always seems to bring out a big crowd of helpers.”

The planning session will be held on Wednesday July 22nd at 5:30 pm in the Carolina Colours Social Pavilion located at 3300 Waterscape Way, New Bern, NC.  New Bern and Craven County residents interested in learning more and helping with the project are encouraged to attend.
