Community Appreciation Day

Saturday, February 8, 2020 – 10:00am to 4:00pm

Come visit Tryon Palace and enjoy activities and craft demonstrations free-of-charge at Community Appreciation Day! Discover military through the ages, explore a Civil War Encampment at the New Bern Academy, and learn about genealogy and family history. Free tours include the first floor of the Governor’s Palace, Kitchen Office, Stable Office, historic Stanly House, 16 acres of gardens, and the New Bern Academy.

Also at this event: Military Through the Ages Timline demonstrations, Family History & Heritage Fair, and lectures in the Cullman Performance Hall at the North Carolina History Center.

Lecture Schedule:

10 a.m. Garden Lecture Series – Hadley Cheris, Tryon Palace

1 p.m.: Basic Concepts in African-American Genealogy – Chris Meekins, North Carolina Archives

2 p.m.: Finding your Ancestors as Children in Genealogical Research – Victor T. Jones, Jr., Craven County Public Library, Kellenberger Room

3 p.m.: Finding Your Female Ancestors: Sources for Women’s Records at the State Archives – Debbi Blake, North Carolina Archives

The Tryon Palace gardens and grounds and the North Carolina History Center will be open from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Activities, crafts, and historic buildings will be open from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Please note: this event includes free tours of the first floor of the Palace, the Kitchen Office, and the Stanly house, entrance to the New Bern Academy Museum and Tryon Palace Gardens, as well as access to some galleries in the North Carolina History Center. A Galleries Pass is required for entrance to the Pepsi Portal to History and the Regional History Museum exhibits.
